The Tunnel of Life is inspired by the Canadian artist Callum Morton, who specialises in creating installations which transcend the boundary between architecture and sculpture. The installation therefore takes form as an artistic pathway which represents the aesthetic philosophy of Morton and communicates a melancholic and cinematic interpretation of modernisation and society.
To achieve a captivating effect and theatrical atmosphere, the installation manifest a very dramatic materiality of weathered steel and Excava concrete. The materials relate back to the interpretation of industrialisation and the installation follows an irregular shape. The tall
tall walls and tortuous shape captivate visitors in a dramatic and surrealistic experience, as a representational understanding of life.
The installation is completely self-sufficient as it utilises a smart flooring which generates energy from the weight of footsteps. The energy provides power to the light and sound systems which follows the foot traffic and creates an uncanny feeling of being observed, which represents the recent surge of technological surveillance. Altogether, the Tunnel of Light has become an installation that isn't just sustainable but also an interactive and soulful window to current civilisation.
